A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
