Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
